The IAEA, widely known as the international organization of the United Nations System, operates under the slogan «Atom for Peace and Development» as an international centre for nuclear cooperation. Together with its Member States and numerous partners around the world, the Agency works to promote the safe, reliable and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

The IAEA's governing bodies decide on the Agency's programmes and budget. These include a General conference composed of all member States and a Governing Council consisting of 35 members. The General Conference meets annually at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, usually in September. The Council meets five times a year, also in Vienna.The IAEA's political activities are managed by the Board of Governors from 35 States.The current work is carried out by the Secretariat. Argentine Rafael Mariano Grossi has been heading the IAEA as Director-General since the beginning of 2020.
